KK Pilates 4th Anniversary & Pilates reformer introduction

The young ones : Bryan, Stephanie, Sherry, Ice and Fiona. The winners of the 1st Closed Pilates group competition held in KK Pilates studio.

Reformer Introduction

On 26th November 2011, KK Pilates studio celebrated its 4th Anniversary and at the same time launched 2 new Pilates products called the Reformer. The Reformer is one of the main piece of Pilates equipement designed by the founder, Joseph pilates , a century ago. The benefits of the reforemer are to make certain mat exercises easier to do and also at the same time to add challenge to some of the mat exercises. With the use of the machine, results can be achieved faster than just doing pilates on the mat. A complete pilates workout should include both mat and reformer as they complement each other.

During the anniversary,We had a Pilates group competition followed by reformer demo and introduction. The winner of the competition was a group who called themselves the Young one. Their interesting choreography, synchronization and difficult stunts impressed the judges and the audience.

Pilates Day 2011

Am thankful for another year of successful Pilates Day event. This year I even had students contributing their ideas on the Pilates performances which show how involved they were in their performances. The turn out of audience was not that good, maybe due to public holiday and event started early. But it was great to see family members and friends come to support my event and that my students worked so well as a team and put up a great show. A big thank you to all my students and the attendees of the day!!! :)

Cheers,
Regina

1st Annual Pilates Retreat 20th - 21st Nov 2010

Pilates towel work
Paper plate pilates

Pilates demo

Pilates competition

Ice breaking session

Group photo session

Had our first Pilates retreat in Celyn Resort, Kundasang 2 weeks ago! !

On the first day of our retreat, we checked in at about 2 pm. It took us about 2 hours to get to the resort. The ride was kind of scarry because the resort was situated so high up from the foot of the hill. But surprisingly, weather was not that cold.

At about 3 pm,we started off with a welcoming speech by me and then all participants took turns to do self intro. There was 19 particippants and 14 of them were KK Pilates students. After that, I showed an interesting video clip on pilates. Showing how all types of machines are being used in Pilates. Pilates is more than just matwork. Hopefully, KK Pilates studio can be a fully equipped studio in the near future. Then, we learned some pilates moves using paper plate. It was not easy at all, lots of core muscles were involved. After that, we divided the participants into 3 groups for games. For games, we did Pilates quiz and we had participants doing some pilates exercises. In the Pilates exercises, participants had to compete on a few Pilates elements such as abs strength, co ordination, fluidity of movement and precisions. We took a break after the games, and we continued with Rythm Pilates. Participant were taught to move with rhythm and it was exciting for all of them as they need to move fast to catch up with the beats.

After Rhythm, we had dinner and then we ended the day with lucky draws. Prizes given were Pilates mat, free class vouchers and Pilates band.

On the next day, we all had to wake up really early to do Pilates towel work at 6.30pm. Glad everyone had no problem waking up that early. We got to do Pilates with a crystal clear view of Mt. Kinabalu. We ended the second day with a closing speech and group photo sessions. Second day of retreat happened to be my birthday as well and I had all participants celebrating my birthday with me!!! Some of them even gave me very lovely presents!!We also had a cake delivered all the way from Ranau.

Right after breakfast, we also enjoyed a short Pilates demo by the the group of participants who lost in the games the day before.

Second day of retreat was indeed too short for most of us. I guess the retreat was so fun that most of them wanted more. Hope to have more activities iand more people participating in the next retreat.

Photos taken on Pilates Day 2010

KK Pilates Day 2010

KK Pilates day was held on 17th April, 2010.We were lucky to have it in a very grand hall, which was SESB hall. All thanks to my 2 beloved students, Ernie and Mag, who happen to be SESB staff.

We had more students performed this year as well. Actually, 90% of KK Pilates students performed and they performed well. I, as their Pilates teacher, am so proud of them and feel very grateful as well.

There were about 60 spectators on that day. Not alot, but enough to make it a successful event.

We started with a welcoming speech by Roger Wang. Then, I took over to give a brief self -introduction, followed by testimonials from 2 of my students. After that, I proceeded to giving a talk on "what is Pilates and its benefits". Then came the exciting part which was the performances of my students. Next, was a free trial class for audience which was led by me with the help of my advanced student Ming Hui as my model. There was only 10 mats for the audience. Those who were interested had to quickly run up to the front to grab a mat. We were surprised that more than 10 people were interested to try Pilates out on the spot. We though they would shy away or show no interest at all.

Just to have an idea of what Pilates Day was like, I have uploaded some wonderful photos taken by my student, Basil. Do enjoy browsing through the pics. For those of you who did not join us this year, we hope you will join us next year!

A brief description on why men should take up pilates:

Pilates was started by a man, Joseph Pilates; it's been a training vehicle for elite athletes, both men and women, for over 50 years; and men have figured prominently as instructors and promoters of the Pilates method throughout its history.

Though men have always been part of the Pilates scene, the surge of popularity that Pilates has enjoyed in recent years has been powered to a large extent by a wave of women participants and instructors, leaving some with the impression that the Pilates method is more for women. This is an unfortunate side-effect of an otherwise positive development. Fortunately, it is quickly dissolving. Pilates is one of the fastest growing fitness trends in the world, and men are definitely taking advantage of Pilates many benefits.

  • Core strength, flexibility, balance, uniform development, and efficient movement patterns - all are hallmarks of Pilates training and highly relevant to mens fitness. The integrative component of Pilates can be especially beneficial for men, whose workouts often emphasize a part-by-part approach to muscular development, such as what what finds in weightlifting.
Pilates, by contrast, emphasizes moving from the center of the body, the powerhouse, and developing core strength in the deep muscles of the center to stabilize the trunk and protect the back. This kind of core training makes Pilates an excellent technique for whole-body fitness, as well as a foundation for cross training with other kinds of sports and exercise.
  • Increasing flexibility is a goal that Pilates addresses in a way that men often feel comfortable with. Pilates works toward functional fitness. That is, the ability to have the strength, balance, and flexibility that allows one to move through daily-life tasks with grace and ease. To this end, Pilates exercises do seek to increase flexibility and range of motion, but one won't find the kind of pretzel stretches in Pilates that one might find in gymnastics or yoga.

New Pilates Toy this month

This month, we have a new toy in the studio. It's called a foam roller. So what is a foam roller?
As seen above, it is the purple(comes in other colours too) tube that is made of foam and originally used for therapeutic purposes only.
So what is it for?

The Pilates foam roller adds fun and challenge to you pilates workout. It is extraordinarily effective to activate deep core muscles, improve balance and posture, and strengthen extremities. It is also magical for myofascial release and self-massage.
